I just spoke with a Nikon Representative. I quoted your statement about the new parts being installed soon to fix this issue. He said that the new parts were now being installed on the new D600's being made. I asked how I could tell if the camera I was going to purchase had the new parts installed. He stated that there is no way to tell which camera's had the new parts installed. I asked if I could tell by Serial Number. He stated that their Serial Numbers are randomly generated and there is no way to tell if a camera has the new parts installed or not. I asked if I ordered a camera instead of buying what a camera store has in stock, if I would receive a camera with the new parts installed. He stated "I would assume so."
I really wanted to buy this camera but I don't need a headache after spending $2000.00 for the body alone. That is a ton of money to me. I cannot believe that they will not admit there is a wide spread problem with the oil/dust on the sensor. I told the gentleman that I had been looking at this camera and others for 2 months and every web site that I looked at the reviews for the D600 had a lot of complaints about this issue. He stated that not every D600 has this issue so it is Nikon's Policy that they are dealing with it on a case by case basis instead of issuing a recall. If this was a car, it would have been recalled with as many complaint there are for this issue on the D600.
Is there any Government Agency that we could contact for assistance? The only other thing I can think of is a Class Action Lawsuit. Although the gentleman at Nikon was very polite, it is clear that Nikon is not listening to their customers. I am extremely thorough when making a major purchase such as this one. I cannot tell you how many web sites I have visited in the past 2 months and all of them without fail have a large number of complaints of the oil/dust issue.
I have been in the Nikon "Family" for over 35 years and have a sizable investment in lenses. So, I don't know whether I should purchase this camera or not. I don't want to support a company that refuses to admit their mistakes. HP is another company with the same problem and I will never buy another HP product as long as I live.
I wanted to share the info that apparently the problem has been fixed. I wish I could tell and tell all of you how to know the difference between a D600 with the new parts installed and the one without them.
