So I've been researching F31 reviews since i found a place where i can get my hands on one but the reviews seem really mixed. some think it's the best thing since sliced bread for P&S, and others are really disappointed. Why is this? And why is it that the f31 is immediately compared to Canon's cameras with IS? Is it really that much better than a powershot for low light situations?
I happen to find any P&S in low light situation is going to produce sub par results. Even on a DSLR its hard to get an amazing shot in low light. (good, sure, but amazing? not as easily)
Bas:
as much as I would like to use my IS equipped PowerShots sans flash when shooting people, its hard to get a crisp shot since any movement really throws off the whole image. for stationary objects, is there really that much of a difference when shooting flashless between Fuji's f30+31 and a PowerShot with IS? (SD700-950IS)???
Well, I own one and have taken over 1000 shots with it. Yes it is way way overhyped. I have had a problematic relationship with it from the beginning. Let me summarize it as follows: the percentage of likable pictures taken with it, is way way below what I am used to as an Ixus 40 user (in terms of exposure, colours and contrast). This goes for indoors and outdoors. It's not just a matter of taste, it's a matter of overall *reliability*.
+ Resolution
+ Good high ISO (up till ISO 400 it's good, above it unbearable NR artefacts)
- Processed look, not smooth, oversharpening hints
- NR artefacts all over the place (looks often VERY bad at 100%)
- White balance problems, often bad colours
- I often don't like the contrast
- Unreliable metering
There are many many fans of the F31. And I am a disappointed user. I like my S80 far better. YES the F31 is absolutely overhyped. Good resolution and good higher ISO's, everything else is below standard.
Best regards,
Bas
Take F40... if you can't find an F31fd. It's still decent at ISO400-1600 and can be had for a fraction of the F31fd's that are 'over-inflated' on eBay. I paid only $140 (w/ship) on eBay for my F40fd and love it - the LCD is better than the F31's, it takes SD cards and it has less PF/CA and the Face Detect works well in all modes not just in Auto (like the F31fd) sure it doesn't have manual control (but has a decent sport mode) and is a hair worse at ISO400/800/1600 than the F31fd but it's still better than the competition and it actually seems better outdoors than the F31fd to me.
