Dear all,

I'm new here and unfortunately I can't speak German. I have to translate the pages into english to read.

i'm going to get a digital camera end of this month. my question is that, 300D or 20D.

1. 6 MPX vs 8 MPX is not a big issue to me
2. firmware upgrade can enable mirror lock-up, ISO 3200 and metering modes on 300D
3. 20D is so lovely.

so do you guys think it's still a good choice to pick up a 20D?

I have some questions here:

1. is it possible to physically expand the memory of the camera so that it can store more frames at 5 fps??

2. what tricks are you guys going to do with a 20D later on?

(I can afford 20D, but if 300D can do every job except megapixels, i'd rather spend the money on lenses).

best regards,

frank

no problem frank!
we are an international forum here!

I am a former 10D user, so I can only tell you what I know from 300D users. In general they say that the upgrade is significant, especially for features that were missing compearing to the 10D & that were in part solved with the firmware crack (310 users ..)

you are right, the megapixels are not an argument. An argument is shurely the digic II processor giving the camera tremendous speed & the new AF system that makes the camera less "lens-sensible" ..

every user that has made the jump from 300D -> 20D seems pleased, all beiing for the lockups that canon hopefully will soon solve. some issue are also the smaller body-size .. some user say the bigger "feel" of the 10D was better. Some users also find the new BG-ED2 to be cheaper made then the BG-ED3.

Resuming it can be said that when the camera-lockups are solved, the 20D is a awsome camera & that the jump from 300d -> 20D is well worh the price!

Well, I'm impressed. That's what I call real dedication. :D

Now, seriously, you might want to have a look at www.fredmiranda.com, www.dpreview.com or any of the English speaking newsgroups on photography (don't have the names ready, try Google). My guess is that you will get the information you're seeking more easily over there.

Anyway, welcome aboard! :)

That pretty much depends on your photographic needs and budget and cannot be adequately answered in a general way.

I for one still am very happy with my 300d, which I purchased this spring, and have no reason to upgrade to any other camera right now.

I don't think so, no.

Huh???

Taking pictures, what else? Juggling???

IMHO spending your money on fine lenses instead of on the body is almost always the better choice. But as I said above, depends on your needs.

Cheers,

Oliver

Ok, i will do my very best, my english isn't very good.

What will you do with your new Cam, what are your uses of your new Cam?
1. I have the 300D and I think 6 Mpix is enough, I get prints in 70x50 cm and they look great.
2. The firmware is not a regular firmware it is a Hack from a russian.
What do you think about a 10D, this Cam have all the advanteges you would get with the Hack, and you can get it to a lower price then the 20D.

To your questions:

1. Its not possible.

If I can make this choice i would try the 10D und spend more money in the lenses. If you change the Body in some years, you can use your lenses.

Hey,

First of all the difference of prices is not that much:

20d - approx.**1200 - 1300 Euro/US$
10d - approx.**1000 - 1100 Euro/US$
300d - approx.**700 - 900 Euro/US$

It's kind of hard to explain camera stuff in a foreign language and because of this i'd give you an advice to check the american boards.
They are sometimes even better ..

But anyway ...

I'd buy the 20d / 10d , because you have enough money to afford it and so you're gonna do better with those cameras.
Wether 20d or 10d is your choice , but I'll explain why I'd prefer the 20d to the 300d
Particularly**the quality of the body, more megapixels, the new and better AF-system, the speed, more options, better working lenses ...
Are some little points which make the 20d more interesting

hanshelm

But the 10D is definiteley build more solid. If you are going to use the equipement in rough conditions this might be a point.

I would prefer 10D or 20D too because of the much better handling with two wheels and custom functions. The points where the 20D ist worse than a 10D are:

* Shutter Noise (important if you shoot e.g. wildlife)
* Buffer in RAW
* Build quality
* price...

Ciao, Udo

thank you so much guys for your quick and kind replies. i think my mind is made: 20D. i just found out one crucial point i underlooked before: 20D has a better long-exposure performance http://www.dpreview.com/articles/canoneos20d/page12.asp. that's important to me.

desmodue: glad to hear that it's an international forum here. and glad too to hear that users who made the jump from 300D to 20D are pleased.

Hi OIPI, www.fredmiranda.com is new to me. a nice place to go though. thank you.

i am hanging around some english forums, but since i like german engineering (esp cars and camera/lenses), i like german philosophy (esp Kant), i like german music (too many, don't let me start), so i asked myself why don't i just come and listen to what smart germans think and say?

language wise....well....i'm going to start learning German a month later.

Olih, a 1-year old, heavily-used-but-well-kept, no warranty 10D is USD300 cheaper than a new one. so if i go for a 2nd hand 10D, i'd rather go and get a new 10D; if i go for a new 10D, i'd rather go and get a new 20D (another USD 150).

hanshelm: you are already helpful. i'll try to learn and speak a little German to communicate better. but you can always reply in your language (that's why i'm here) and i'll manage to read them (either through an electronic translator or a human translator. :-))

Hi Ubit, these two arguments are new to me. I thought the build quality would be the same? and i thought 20D has a better buffer capacity? care to explain more?

best regards,

frank

@franxon: Ok I don't know the priceses in US, here in Germay the differece Price between new 10D and new 20D ist approx. 400 - 500 Euro. My gratulation to your decision to buy a 20D. ;)

The 10D is just build more solid. Go to the next shop an compare them side by side and you will see. The difference ist definitly there. The 20D feels a little bit more plastic.

The Buffer in both cameras seems to be of equal size. That is why the 20D can only take 5 Raw's in rapid succession. And this buffer is not extendable. Only becaus of the faster processor the 20D can take more JPEG's before the buffer is full.

Ciao, Udo

the 10D doesn't depreciate so much here, it is about USD/Euro 150 cheaper than a 20D. so no point go for 10D.

Neiter does the 2nd hand 10. 20D is also 50-150 Euro more expensive than in Germany/US. a crazy place. haha.

Ubit: i forgot to count the diff in megapixels.

well, looks like you're even more german than most of the guys hanging around here:). sorry, but i can't give you any advice cuz i'm not into that material as some nerds here. anyway, hope you'll have fun with either 300D or 20D ;)

btw, i'm quite interested in what kind of bands you mean with german music. i think most of them suck...
