Best SD card for Canon EOS M + Magic Lantern

Hey!

I just have bought budget Canon EOS M with a Canon 22 f/2 lens. I'm a comp/dmp adept and my main reason for buying this equipment was to take some photo references for matte painting and to record some short clips to excersise roto/paint and other comp stuff. As I learned, EOS M was one of the cheapest gear at the market that offers recording in RAW, and yes, I'm aware it's not a pro camera...not even close.... yet it's still better than smartphone:) Since I'm a total newbie here, I would like to ask you about the best option in terms of SD/SDHC card for my EOS M to install Magic Lantern and record/take photos in RAW.

Extra questions, do you have any experience with small, portable, not expensive tripods? Which one is worth buying for someone on a tight budget?

Thank you very much for any suggestions,

Cheers!

For the old M any decent Class 6 to 10 SD Card from a brand like Transcend, SanDisk, Samsung, Toshiba etc. will do!
It`s not really a fast Camera and as such also not very demanding on the memorybandwith.

I used to use a somewhat cheap and now quite old 16GB Class 6 SanDisk Ultra with ML for the Camera and it worked just fine.

RAW/MLV using Nightly Build on EOS M will do about 38-40 MByte/s write rate. Good for about 720p25 continuously (14 bit, uncompressed). Experimental builds offer reduced bit depth (10 or 12) and lossless compression (up to about 50 percent, depending on scene). Expands useable resolutions a bit ...

With cutting edge SD interface overclocking about 65 MByte/s is possible. Requires custom build. ML Forum thread: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9741.msg212373#msg212373 reply #2991 by Danne.

Because it is cutting edge (able to fry your card in an instant) there is limited knowledge about card compatibility. To keep it on the safe side you may opt to purchase a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MByte/s.

If you don't want to go rogue you may be happy with any card doing 45 MByte/s in write mode. I recommend to visit www.cameramemoryspeed.com first and check their benchmark runs. Don't forget EOS M doesn't have an UHS-II interface. Such cards will run in UHS-I mode.

And maybe you may consider visiting ML forums for questions about Magic Lantern. Validation period there may be intimidating but it is a proven method to keep the forum spam free.

But that somewhat only applies for Video Recording via ML in general...and more specific for the hacked "RAW-Video" mode doesn`t it? :D

The TO specifically asked for normal RAW Photos! ;)
In normal operation the Camera isn`t really that demanding, because of the somewhat slow AF and Burst Rates.
That even applies to the OOTB H.264 HD Video Modes or when you use ML only to enable Focus Peaking and such.

depending on which height you need, this may be an option or not: a tabletop tripod made from aluminium for approx. 20 Euro (10cm height). I always have this in my kit (weighs next to nothing).
If you need more height, check for the multiple "travel tripod" options from vendors like Sirui, Velbon, Benro or Rollei (many more available). The M is light and does not pose any serious challenge to tripods in the 80+ Euro range, assumed they're not overpriced and assumed you don't use any focal length above 100mm.
